FIGHT OF THE UNDERDOG
May 23, 2009

On May 23, 2009, Tommy "Duke" Morrison will re-enter the world of prize fighting since he was band by the U.S. Boxing Federation in 1999 for claiming to test positive for the AIDS virus in order to avoid a looming fight with "Iron" Mike Tyson. Morrison left boxing and began fighting in the world of MMA in 2007, registering 3 victories in the first round by TKO and KO. The MMA world found that Morrison was a quick money-maker and people jumped at the chance to see the former champ step back into fighting. Morrison, now 39, looks better than he has ever looked before at 6-3, 237. All 3 of
the MMA fights that Morrison took part in were fought with basically boxing rules, taking away the edge of a typical MMA fighter and many promotors began to feel that Morrison was taking advantage of his sudden MMA fame by "holding crowds hostage" until the rules were changed just before a fight to favor him, a heavyweight experienced champion. In May of 2009, the Duke, will face a relatively unknown and unexperienced fighter in 33-year-old, Minnesota native, Eric Purdy, who currently resides in Utah. Purdy, a former college and arena football player, stands a meer 5-11, 240, but has the power that not even Tyson harnessed in his prime. "He (Purdy) is very capable of knocking out Morrison with one solid punch from his incredibly quick right," says boxing analyst, Terry Atlas, who was Tyson's trainer back in the days of Tyson's reign. "Eric Purdy (in action to the right) may not have the professional experience as Morrison, but Purdy is younger and is quicker than any fighter Tommy Morrison ever faced in his entire career." Eric Purdy accepted the challange of fighting Tommy Morrison last November and the fight was postponed when Purdy suffered a massive hip and pelvis injury while playing for the Utah Saints of the AIFL, and Morrison broke his hand while sparing. Morrison is most known for his part as Tommy Gunn in the feature film, Rocky 5. Tommy Morrison is a career and seasoned veteran in the world of prize fighting and his power has only gotten deadlier. Eric Purdy's experience derived from his amateur military record of 5 KO's and 8 TKO's. Purdy hasn't had a decent training session since his football injury in May of 2007, but is now back walking and training for this 12-round promotional fight 5 miles from the home he grew up in for awhile after his parents moved from Utah back in 1984. Purdy was a Marine Force Recon Association officer for 4 excellent years following college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Eric Purdy's military background has been sealed tight but his performance as a Recon sniper and SEAL instructor has been well documented. If Purdy's personal problems with the legal system continue then the fight will yet again be suspended. Handley Promotions are the party responsable for organizing the fight between Morrison and Purdy and the payoff for the two fighters to just walk into the ring is staggering. This fight is by far the focus of 2009 fight fans and media. A comback bout for Tommy "Duke" Morrison and a make it or break it fight for Eric Purdy in Farmington, Utah.
